Sliding Patio Doors
Sliding patio doors are an excellent choice if you want big views but need to conserve floor space. Because it slides on a track, a sliding glass door is, by necessity, two panels, so you need a fair amount of wall space — but they’re great if you have limited floor space. Like a sliding window, it does not protrude into the space and is great for walkways, narrow rooms, or places where you want furnishings nearby.
Many people feel a sliding (gliding) patio door is the more contemporary type (compared to a hinged or French patio door). But we are all about customization! If you love the look of a traditional French door but need to save space, consider leveraging grille options to recreate that traditional many-lite look.
Our Andersen sliding glass patio doors come in contemporary styling with narrower rails and larger glass area (A-Series and 200 Series), as well as traditional styling with wider rails (A-Series and 400 Series). All feature tempered glass and the unique Andersen® reachout locking system for weathertightness and enhanced security.

About Sliding Patio Doors
Everything you want to know about Sliding Patio Doorss.
What’s the difference between a French-door patio door and a sliding glass patio door?
French doors have hinges and swing open (inswing or outswing). Sliding doors glide on a track with no floor space required. French doors are more traditional; sliders more contemporary. Sliding doors require at least two panels; hinged can have one. Only sliding doors can take a footlock for partial-open venting.
What are the advantages to a sliding glass door?
Big views and maximum light (the two-panel design); space savings (it doesn’t protrude into interior or exterior); and an optional footlock for enhanced security that also allows a partial-open venting position.
How many panels can I have in a replacement sliding patio door?
Most series offer two- and four-panel options. The 200 Series Perma-Shield® is available in two-panel only. All models come in left- or right-sided sliding and standard and custom sizes.
Are your sliding glass doors energy efficient?
Yes. ENERGY STAR® certified configurations are available for most climate zones, with a wide variety of glass options (dual- and triple-pane, various coatings). Professional installation ensures no gaps or air infiltration.
Are replacement sliding patio doors secure?
Yes. All patio doors feature tempered glass and the Andersen® reachout locking system. An optional six-pin key cylinder lock allows exterior keyed entry, and an auxiliary footlock adds security in closed or partial-open positions. A Stormwatch® PG upgrade is available for coastal areas.
Are there different glass options for sliding patio doors?
Yes. Options include Low-E, Low-E HeatLock®, Low-E Sun, Low-E SmartSun™, Low-E SmartSun HeatLock, and dual-pane tempered glass. Enhanced triple pane is also available.
Can I get screens for my sliding patio doors?
Yes. Gliding/sliding screens (two- and four-panel doors, with bottom rollers and leveling adjusters) and retractable screens (two-panel doors, installed on the exterior, retracting into a side canister). All screens use long-lasting fiberglass mesh color-matched to the door exterior.
How long does it take to replace a sliding glass patio door?
Most replacement jobs are completed in as little as one day, depending on the number of doors, crew size, and structural complexity.
