Hinged Patio Doors
If you’re looking for a patio door that blends timeless style with everyday function, a hinged patio door — often called a “French door” — could be the perfect fit.
A common French door configuration is two operable panels hinged on the outer edges, allowing you to open one or both. Another option is the center-hinged patio door, with one stationary panel and one active panel, maximizing floor space while maintaining a traditional look. Hinged patio doors are available in combinations of one to four panels.
Hinged doors can be configured to open inward or outward. An outswing door preserves interior floor space; an inswing door works where the door opens onto a walkway or porch seating. Our Andersen® hinged patio doors come in contemporary styling (A-Series) with narrower rails and more glass, as well as traditional styling with wider rails (A-Series and 400 Series).

About Hinged Patio Doors
Everything you want to know about Hinged Patio Doorss.
What’s the difference between a French-door patio door and a sliding glass patio door?
French doors have hinges on the side and swing open (inswing or outswing). Sliding doors glide on a track and require no additional floor space. French doors are more traditional; sliding doors more contemporary. Sliding doors require at least two panels; hinged doors can have just one. Only sliding doors can take a footlock.
What are the advantages to a French patio door?
Traditional aesthetic appeal; flexible inswing/outswing configuration; a single-panel option for smaller wall spaces; and with double operable panels, opening both creates a markedly wider opening for superior airflow.
How many panels can I have in a replacement French patio door?
One, two, or three panel configurations. The two- and three-panel options can have one or two operable panels. All are available in left- or right-sided operation, inswing and outswing options, and standard and custom sizes.
Are your hinged patio doors energy efficient?
Yes. ENERGY STAR® certified configurations are available for most climate zones, with a wide variety of glass options including dual- and triple-pane. Professional installation ensures no gaps or air infiltration.
Are French patio doors secure?
Yes. All patio doors feature tempered glass and the Andersen® reachout locking system. Additional options include a six-pin key cylinder lock and the Yale® Assure Lock® Keyless Lock (A-Series). A Stormwatch® PG upgrade is available for coastal areas.
Are there different glass options for hinged patio doors?
Yes. Options include Low-E, Low-E HeatLock®, Low-E Sun, Low-E SmartSun™, Low-E SmartSun HeatLock, and dual-pane tempered glass. Enhanced triple pane is also available. Ask your Design Consultant for the right option for your climate zone.
Can I get screens for my hinged patio doors?
Yes. Options include top-hung gliding screens (inswing doors), conventional gliding screens, hinged screens (single-panel inswing), double-hinged screens (two-panel jamb-hinged), and retractable screens (outswing doors).
How long does it take to replace a hinged patio door?
Most replacement jobs are completed in as little as one day, depending on the number of doors, crew size, and structural complexity.
